(79) Haywire has taken some flak for its chilly, informal performances and off-kilter soundtrack. It’s even been said that those elements are what spoil an otherwise solid cake. Replace the word “spoil” with spice and “solid” with bland in the last sentence and you’ve hit nearer the mark. The blunt, brutal (almost matter-of-fact) fight scenes might serve as meat and potatoes but it’s the retro espionage score and rugged realism of Gina Carano that elevate Haywire above ordinary spy fare.
